Primary School admission is not fair, but inevitable: MM Lee

As we all know, the admission to primary schools in singapore is based on priority given to
1) Children with siblings in that school.
2) Parents who are volunteers in the school.
3) Children who are living near the school of choice.
4) Parents who were alumnus of the school.

To a certain extend, I think this priority given is not a bad thing as the children are after all still young and needs supervision. Hence, children will be taken cared by siblings/parents in the school.

Also, since primary children are still young and may not be able to adapt to the long school hours as compared to when they are in kindergarten, it'll be way better for these children to enter a school that is near their home for convenience and safety. Children do not have to travel long distances just to get to school.

On the other hand, according to research studies and what MM Lee mentioned,

"RGPS offers the Gifted Eduation Programme (GEP), and last year, had an aggregate PSLE score of 234.7 out of a possible 300. Punggol Primary’s aggregate score was 201.9.

In addition, 85.6 per cent of RGPS students qualified for the Express stream in secondary school, whereas 54.2 per cent from Punggol Primary were eligible. "
The results show that a good school does plays a part in better performance results of students in that particular school. It could be the way that school teaches, the school's system or the environment.
However, although it may be true for some, not every kid in the better school does as well. Similarly, for students in neighbourhood schools, they can do well as well.
In my opinion, I think that it is the hard work & understanding of the students to enable them to excel in their studies regardless of which school they are in.
In addition, if the students or parents of these students really want their children to be in a good school, they can work hard for (PSLE) and get into a better school for secondary education. After all, primary school is to give students a basic foundation.
