Flooded Australia city faces long wait to dry out
In the picture shown above, floodwaters are seen in the Depot Hill district of Rock Hampton, Australia. The floods have cut the road links and it is threatening the sewage plant. With such floods, a long wait will be required before it dries up and an estimated amount of $5 billion will be needed in home rebuilding effort, rebuilding of the public infrastructure and economic loss.
After reading this article, I felt really blessed to be in a safe city like Singapore where we do not have as much natural disasters as compared to other countries. I cannot imagine myself having to evacuate from my own house and watch helplessly as the flood level rises continuously. In times like this, we can only wish for help to come and to be safe on the ground with shelter.
Natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes or typhoons are occurring more frequent in recent years. Many people are unprepared when these disasters strike. Hence, lives are taken, many injured and homes were destroyed. When this happens, people are left heart broken and homeless. This may also change one's perception towards life.
The aftermath of disasters may lead to poor sanitation, the lack of food, and shelter. Also, people are more prone to diseases such as cholera, dysentery and typhoid fever. In addition, money will be spent on rebuilding homes, buildings and on healthcare. Disasters also destroy the beauty of a country and this may affect the country's economy in terms of tourism and business ventures.
Although these natural disasters are beyond our control, it is known that human activities play a role in the frequency of these disasters. Hence, by understanding the cases of natural disasters, it can provide us with clues for prevention and natural disasters can be reduced if we do something about it to stop harming the environment.
